Proposal:
Xia Cweba works predominately in painting and printmaking {silkscreen} are inspired by African symbolism of fertility dolls, layered women using different aspects of feminity and aspects of fertility both African
Taboos and Westernised Ideologies. During the making the artist considers the idea behind apraxia and lets go of traditional art-making and it boundaries this allows the viewer to travel from different directions within the space looking at scratches, brush strokes and collage imaginary these posses a lot of cultural/traditional/spiritual meanings but the artist chooses to focus on the aspect of identity and belonging to a certain background of ethnicity and spirituality . But most importantly Xia’s work touch on the ongoing debate women of colour have about fitting into different worlds in a modern era.
