Proposal:
My artistic practice is an on going cross-examination of
Stereotypical ideology of black womanhood. Through
cultural and traditional view points intertwined with
Harsh critical western standards gaze. My aim is to show how black
female bodies are overly sexualised publicly and made to feel like they
have no ownership of their identity.
The interest in this is how do they navigate both private
and public spaces which relate to the safety of these bodies. My work
uses both mythological langue of African stylistic history and Western
symbols. By doing this I hope to start a conversation of how the over
sexualization of black female bodies started and why this was overly
Biography:
Xia Cweba (1991) is a Johannesburg based artist and
curator. Multi-disciplinary artist, creative writer and
researcher, and creative conceptualist. Durning 2018 she
took part in the partnership between Tshwane University
of Technology and the National Heritage Project
Company. she went on to complete a degree in Fine and
Applied Arts.
Xia honed her creative intellect from Ruth Prowse
School of Art, Woodstock Cape Town.
She is also part of the Re-capitoli team based in Pretoria
and conceptualize its creative projects.. She was also the Educational
Assistance Preparatory Programme in Pretoria Art museum, a
developmental orientated programme offered
by the Pretoria Art Museum behalf of City of Tshwane as
a strategy for community development. The fundamental
aim of the programme is to furnish the museum with
competent guides to assist in educational guided tours
that the museum offers to public while enhancing the
expertise of candidate to enable them to be competent in
their chosen field. She took part in the BASA scale up
program in 2018, and curated the THAT’S WHAT SHE
SAID Exhibition in 2019 part of artist talks hosted by
Bag factory facilities and created by Palesa Segomotso
Motsumi.
