Proposal:
Life is an interplay of art, science and spirit which explores the wisdom of Sacred Geometry, inviting us to partake in a
wholly worthwhile transformational journey.
During 2020 Nicci explored the notions of LIMINAL SPACE as a response to navigating through the C19 pandemic.
‘LIMINAL SPACE is an inner state and an outer situation. We are betwixt and between, having left one room and not yet
entered the next. Our former way of life is being challenged. In this space we are not certain or in control.’ (R.Rohr)
2021 will be focused on taking Liminal Space to the next level, and Nicci aims to explore the narratives of UNVEILING.
UNVEILING : ‘If we trust the universal pattern, the wisdom of all times and places, including creation and evolution of the
cosmos itself, we know that an ending is also a place for a new beginning.’ (R.Rohr)
Nicci Olivier’s art concepts explore the process and journey toward inner transformation.
Her Land Art works undergo a number of transformative processes before a final work is realized.
These processes spontaneously instill additional layers of meaning to the work. Transformation is therefore integrated in
both concept and process/practice.
Since lockdown 2020, Nicci has ‘collaborated’ with her garden as her canvas to create her land art works. The final
images lend themselves to a myriad option, from 2D artworks, sculpture and installation pieces in a variety of mediums.
Site specific installations create wonderful interactive opportunities and experiences for the viewer. Laser cut stainless
steel creates reflections, shadows, patterns and movement as the light changes in situ, alluding to an interplay of
presence and time.
Her artworks usually have a meditative quality, inviting the viewer to a personal experience and instilling a sense of calm
in them, and hopefully an AHA! Generally, the interactive process does not require the viewer to touch the work. The
elements of light, air, wind, heat, cold, reflections and shadows interact with the work, providing the viewer with an
immersive experience.
Biography:
I am a professional South African artist residing in Bryanston, Johannesburg. My art practice is multidisciplinary, and includes; Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Installation, Land Art, Digital Prints and Printmaking.
Over the years I have successfully completed a large number of site specific painting commissions, Steel
Laser wall murals, logos and sculpture for the corporate and hospitality industry. Private commissions
nationally and internationally have included portraits in oil and linoprint, landscape and still life.
I am also one of the vetted Spier Arts Trust artists, This selection entails participation in the bi-monthly
Creative Block Project, the Union Art Fair hand- in, all paired with a constructive crit session and invaluable
mentoring. This means that my work forms part of the Spier/Hollard/Nandos collections.
In 2016 I was selected to do an Artist Residency at Arteles in Finland, The artwork which I developed there
still informs the core concepts that I work with, namely, inner transformation and Sacred Geometry. A huge,
exciting challenge was a ten meter suspended Installation, “Travel Light”, which I installed at the
Turbine Art Fair 2016, (TAF16), My dream is to re visit this piece in order to find a permanent home for it.
One of my volcanic ash and cement Shell sculptures was selected for the national travelling Saadtjies
Exhibition Project. This wonderful project took on an unexpected life of its own culminating in a book with all
participating artists and sculpture pieces, a limited edition print with all the sculptures, and fun photo bomb
shoots with the sculptures in various dorps and cities of South Africa.
In 2017 I was a finalist for the Tollman Finlayson Bouchard Tondo Art Competition Award, and my two tondos
were bought by a collector for the entrance to her wine cellar. Mediums for the works were layered steel laser
cut outs and layered lino cut outs. This was also a wonderful year when RMB, Rand Merchant Bank,
purchased a large mixed media on canvas piece of mine.
I have exhibited extensively in South Africa, and during the four years that I lived and worked in the UK,
During this time a monoprint was selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. My artwork can be
found in private and corporate collections in South Africa, USA, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland,
Scotland, Croatia, Netherlands, Doha, Dubai, Canada.
Other skills and experience includes tutoring Art and holding workshops for children and adults in South
Africa, UK and Menorca.
I am open to accepting commissions and collaborations
