Photographers Luke Kaplan, Brent Meistre and Monique Pelser team up for the JoBurg Fringe 2015, each artist exhibiting and selling works from previous solo shows.

REFUGIUM was a recent exhibition Kaplan had at Commune1 in Cape Town 2015, an exhibition of of hand-printed black and white photographs of his journey on foot around South Africa.

SOJOURN is a series of hand-printed colour landscape photographs made over a period of six years by photographer Brent Meistre.

CONVERSATIONS WITH MY FATHER is an ongoing body of images where Pelser works with the archives of her grandfather and father who were South African Police.

About

LUKE KAPLAN studied Fine Art at Rhodes University, and was awarded a distinction for his Masters show in 2014. He had his first solo show, Refugium, at Commune1 in Cape Town, in 2015. Kaplan is a practicing artist, and lives and works somewhere in South Africa.

BRENT MEISTRE is a South African photographer and film maker based in the Eastern Cape. Brent has been a finalist in the Daimler Chrysler Award for Contemporary Photography in South Africa and received the first Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Museum’s Biennale Award. His work has been featured on the Bamako Photo Biennale in Mali, The International Black Film Festival in Canada and the Kunstvlaai: Festival of Independents. His work has also been shown on Making Way: Contemporary Art from China and South Africa and his SOJOURN project was featured on the Head-On Photography Festival in Australia and the Pingyao Photo Festival in China. In 2013 his extensive SOJOURN project was exhibited on street poles across Cape Town as a part of the Terminal GIPCA LAND project.

MONIQUE PELSER was educated at the Market Photography Workshop in Johannesburg in 1996 and was later awarded a BFA and MFA with distinction from Rhodes University in 2006. Pelser uses photography as a way of exploring conventions and the authority established through photographic representation. Her master’s submission Roles awarded her the accolade by Art South Africa as Bright Young Artist for 2007. In 2009 she won the New York City based Tierney Fellowship for photography, which led her to being awarded a full scholarship to participate in a 10-month residency programme at the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2012/13. Pelser is part of a group of emerging African photographers to attend the portfolio reviews and master classes around Africa since 2008. Since 2007 she has lectured in visual art at Rhodes University Fine Art Department, the University of the Witwatersrand School of Arts and Stellenbosch University Visual Arts Department. Pelser has exhibited widely around the world and is a finalist for the catagory of creative photography for the Mbokodo Awards 2015.
