TAKING A STAND curated by Sarie Potter

Proposal:

Artwork above by James Nilsen-Misra “Constant Reminder” 2018 Acrylic on canvas

TAKING A STAND is Sarie Potter’s third curated offering to Joburg Fringe, showcasing new work by Wonder, James Nilsen-Misra and Brett Seiler that is bold, courageous and irreverent.
The title ‘TAKING A STAND’, which alludes to the photographic practice of taking a photograph, refers more specifically to that significant moment of living: the time to spring into action.

Artists about their work

Wonder ” I am a painter. I have, stored in my mind, countless image-elements gathered over the years in the many spaces where I have lived. How and when I use them is the challenge!”

Brett Seiler “How do you make 4 gay men sit on a chair? – You turn it upsidedown.”
Brett Charles Seiler, b 1994 in Zimbabwe. Currently living and working Cape Town, South Africa.

James Nilsen-Misra
Constant Reminder #s 1-5
James’ surfaces offer a subtlety of indistinct form. Revealing and concealing studio installations. Intrigued by the shadowed memory of the archive, here the Kallenbach/Gandhi gay myth of petroleum jelly on a mantle shelf near the bed as a “constant reminder” of Kallenbach having taken complete possession of his body.
* See the full letter from Gandhi to Kallenbach in Gandhi/Kallenbach Correspondence. 1994 New Delhi Publication Division, Government of India, The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi Vol. 96, p28-9.

In 2014 she archived and catalogued the life-work of painter Brain Bradshaw.
Over the past 11 years Sarie has worked on the Joburg Fringe in a variety of capacities, notably as curator (2013 and 2014) and director (2016).
