Proposal:
Artwork above by James Nilsen-Misra “Constant Reminder” 2018 Acrylic on canvas
TAKING A STAND is Sarie Potter’s third curated offering to Joburg Fringe, showcasing new work by Wonder, James Nilsen-Misra and Brett Seiler that is bold, courageous and irreverent.
The title ‘TAKING A STAND’, which alludes to the photographic practice of taking a photograph, refers more specifically to that significant moment of living: the time to spring into action.
Artists about their work
Wonder ” I am a painter. I have, stored in my mind, countless image-elements gathered over the years in the many spaces where I have lived. How and when I use them is the challenge!”
Brett Seiler “How do you make 4 gay men sit on a chair? – You turn it upsidedown.”
Brett Charles Seiler, b 1994 in Zimbabwe. Currently living and working Cape Town, South Africa.
James Nilsen-Misra
Constant Reminder #s 1-5
James’ surfaces offer a subtlety of indistinct form. Revealing and concealing studio installations. Intrigued by the shadowed memory of the archive, here the Kallenbach/Gandhi gay myth of petroleum jelly on a mantle shelf near the bed as a “constant reminder” of Kallenbach having taken complete possession of his body.
* See the full letter from Gandhi to Kallenbach in Gandhi/Kallenbach Correspondence. 1994 New Delhi Publication Division, Government of India, The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi Vol. 96, p28-9.

SARIE POTTER (Hons curatorship UCT) was born and raised in Johannesburg, she is a freelance itinerant photographic and picture researcher with a keen interest in image archives.
In 1997 she established South Photographs (the successor to the legendary Afrapix that provided a unique conduit of photography to world media during apartheid South Africa), which she directed until 2004 when the collection moved over to digital format. She spent the better part of 2011 sorting out and giving structure to the 30-year archive of photographer Guy Tillim. In 2013 Iziko South African National Gallery commissioned her to archive their collection of photographs by Struan Robertson taken over a period of 61 years, while completing her honours degree in curatorship at the University of Cape Town. In 2014 she archived and catalogued the life-work of painter Brain Bradshaw.
Over the past 11 years Sarie has worked on the Joburg Fringe in a variety of capacities, notably as curator (2013 and 2014) and director (2016).
