Bingo Kondowe

Proposal:

Art is a form of therapy, remedy, an escape plan into mental freedom and a voice of will. It is very personal and spiritual, and aim to provoke contemporary past, present and perhaps future affairs. The idea is aimed to create a correlation between spirituality and reality. Bingo Kondowe strives to inspire black people who do not see a relationship between themselves and the biblical people, because of the western translations, that was imparted to most of Malawian people by virtual. He creates images that birth a sense of belonging, which is done by painting images of black African people and connecting them to the events as well. Having a privilege of growing up in a poor country and relocating to a better one, inspired Kondowe’s craft to serve as a testimony and a tool for sharing best practices, through his own personal experiences and by making a comparison between underdeveloped countries to developed or developing countries. The paintings are mostly done on a stretched canvas, and he uses acrylics, charcoal, ink and oil paints. The body of work is mostly personal opinions and beliefs, nevertheless, he allows the audience to have room for their own translations, meaning and understanding on the work that he produces.

Biography:

My art is extremely spiritual and personal, it’s meant to heal, protect, and preserve history and contemporary affairs. Bingo Kondowe is an abstract, contemporary and expressionism artist born in Malawi and currently based in South Africa, Soweto. His practice is inspired by biblical events and current affairs happening in Africa, especially Malawi as his place of birth. His objectives are creating paintings that will challenge religion by questioning its practices and beliefs, highlight personal issues and to create solutions to our many problems in Africa. As a teenager, his interests for art took its course through abstract sketching and graffiti illustrations, then moved to contemporary paintings. He starts his work by creating an abstract background without an idea of how the final product will look like at the end. This is all for fun and hence most of his work has a playful background. Growing up, Bingo had difficulties in expressing himself, and so, art became his tool to communicate and express efficiently. Everybody has a story to tell, but not everyone is given a platform to tell it. For the same reason, Bingo has dedicated his art, to become a voice and opinion set on his own platform, under his own terms. His Mission statement is to share his views about the bible, on how he understands it. This is to reassure majority of the people that are in his circle, into questioning the book’s philosophies.
