Frederick Clarke

Proposal:

Explorations of abstracted reality, symbols, imagined hybrid biological lifeforms, mark-making, mathematics, and sound are some of the elements that appear in my work. I propose to showcase a selection of work made in the last two years that covers a variety of mediums and topics.

Biography:

Frederick Clarke (born 1986) is a South African artist and music producer living and working in Johannesburg. In 2009 he completed a BA Fine Arts at WITS, and has since been working as a full time artist, as well as music producer.

Clarke’s work ranges in multiple mediums, including charcoal, print, video, painting, lightbox, and ink on paper drawing.

His work explores themes of natural order, mathematics, mark-making, the unseen, language and symbol, synesthesia and an ongoing inquiry into the nature of humanity, earth and the cosmos.

Clarke works with sound in a personalized and self-taught way, combining both organic and synthesized sounds and samples to create his beats and compositions. He produces under the name Premath.
