Proposal:
I would like to do a site specific installation at the Fringe festival. My images are printed on transparency, mylar, silk and other materials to integrate with the aesthetic of the space that I work in. The type of imagery depends on the inspiration of the space, which I prefer to have some age and history to it, rather than just a white box. It appears that there as some great industrial spaces that the Joburg Fringe has used in the past. My most current installation was in a turn of the century officers house on Governors Island in New York which is the Center for Holography. I made 3d / Stereo x-rays of old oilcans, which look like architectural models, printed on transparency and attached to the windows. These appear to float 3d dimensionally in space. I would love to make another piece for the festival.
Biography:
Bryan Whitney is a photographer who has specialized in alternative imaging techniques, art documentation and fine art for decades. After receiving a BA in the Psychology of Art from the University of Michigan and an MFA in photography from the Tyler School of Art, he embarked on a career that has always involved teaching, exhibiting his work and documenting cultural heritage. Examples would include the book “Indonesia, Design and Culture” by Monacelli Press, working for the World Monuments Fund, photographing Ottoman interiors in Syria for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Russian Constructivist architecture, Moldavian churches, 3d photogrammetry of sites in the Republic of Georgia and in the Sudan where he works for the Qatar Museums Authority. He has taught at Rutgers university where he was responsible for developing the Digital photography program and now at the International Center for Photography in New York City. His personal photography, which has been focussed on installations in architectural spaces has been exhibited by a number of galleries, in the US and abroad. He has also been one of the main figures in x-ray photography and his botanical x-rays are well known. He is interested in the aesthetic application of digital imaging, including 360 captures and photogrammetry, and in creating engaging and moving documentation of art and architecture.
