Proposal:

“The artist shapes the beautiful and useful out of the dump heap of human life.” Claude Lévi-Strauss
My work talks to the possibility of reinvention and second chances. A bottle top is not just a bottle top – it is reshaped, a light. A table does not just hold drinks – it tells a story. My work is functional, it has a life of its own.
I work at the intersection of art and craft, blurring the boundary between what one would find in a gallery versus a market.
I am inspired by the concept of the bricoleur, working with the objects to hand to create something novel, something unexpected. As Lévi-Strauss described it, the bricoleur is the “savage mind”, working with her hands in devious ways, putting pre-existing things together in new ways, that they were not originally not meant for.
Materials are altered when they are transformed, so in being melted bottle tops change shape and form, they appear to be in constant motion, and they transform into something new, into art. The result is always different and every piece is unique.

Biography:

Eve de Jong is an artist working with found, reclaimed and recycled objects. Eve was born in Cape Town, and grew up in SA, Belgium and the Netherlands, before returning to South Africa where she studied Dramatic Art at Wits University. Eve has worked as a producer and director, for a national broadcaster and advertising agencies. She exhibited in the group show Waka Waka at Gallery Agog in 2016, and lives and works in Johannesburg.
