Proposal:
I plan to exhibit a small collection of about 15 works. Each of the works are framed oil paintings on canvas or on board, ranging in size from 30cm by 30cm to as large as 125cm by 90cm. The bulk of the paintings were made in 2017 and are part of a new body of work called ‘Immaterium’.
The bulk of the paintings are plays on light, colour, space, and depict vistas of a world after humans.
‘Immaterium’ is a statement about our place and space in the Cosmos and, more importantly, about our impending cataclysmic extinction at our own hands. Here, in the face of this, rational arguments have failed us, leaders have failed us, our way of life has failed us. The only discourse to be had is about the Sublime.
The Sublime is the right vehicle for conversations about our failings and about our hubris. In this way, I refer back to the Romantics and their unfinished Modernist project.
Biography:
I am a full-time professional painter with two-and-a-half decades of experience. I have a Masters in Arts from the NMMU, where I lectured for a fair number of years. I regularly hold classes and lectures for the public. I have exhibited Nationally, both as part of collectives and as the Solo artist.
Additionally, I launched a contemporary fine arts gallery in Port Elizabeth called Underculture but recently pivoted the business to pop-ups and event-based exhibitions.
