Memory, Art and Imagination
Curated by Zanoxolo Sylvester Mqeku.
We wish to exhibit 2 dimensional works (Paintings, Drawings and Photographs) that reference statements from within an ongoing public art project in Bloemfontein, the exhibition will coincide with performances that will travel along with the show.
We are a multidisciplinary collective of six artists and we have partnered with the visual arts network of South Africa (VANSA) on a national public art project titled “2014 ways of being here” http://vansa.co.za/Projects/2014-ways
In 2014 a national call was made to any projects that could respond to the following statement:
The history of South Africa that has led us to this point is as much the history of the individual and the personal as it is the story of the broader narrative. What are the ways in which we practice democracy in our local contexts? Community meetings, stokvel, informal discussions in the street? What are the conditions for negotiation to take place and how much do we replicate democratic processes in our everyday lives? Who decides? Who has as voice?
The work we are showcasing is part of a creative response strategy we have implemented to engage with aspects of individual and collective histories unique to Bloemfontein. The work references published and alternatively documented historical narratives. Currently our work has engaged the participation of 18 learners from a local high school, who will collaborate with the artists to respond to historical resources and objects using poetry, drama, dance and visual art to take the dialogue to public spaces and radio channels.
