Proposal:
HERE A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORIGIN OF OUR YOUNG CAPITAL ELEMENT.
In 2014 we added a new act to our regular line-up. We invited a young guest curator with the brief to organise a special show featuring artists who have had little experience. Asanda Kupa was the first of these curators. He called his show Young Capital – A Visual Example of Re-Creating Capital to Create and he presented the work of five young emerging contemporary South African artists: Gontse Phatsoki More, Jane Boitumelo Khozani, John Brophy, Ntembeko Bonkolo and Thato S. Nhlapo.
We so loved Asanda’s title that we asked if we could adopt it for future Joburg Fringe editions and being the generous soul that he is he readily agreed. Young Capital is our space on the Joburg Fringe to show work that we feel is exiting, promising and strong, our space to give these artists an opportunity to benefit from an all round experience of meeting other artists, chatting to the art interested public and getting some nurturing – it is our way of spreading the love !
2015 Zanoxolo Sylvester Mqeku of Bloemfontein curated Memory, Art and Imagination for Young Capital. During the lead up to the Joburg Fringe, Zanoxolo had a bike accident and was too badly injured to travel or to install the show. This indeed was a crying shame as his artists all hailed from the rarely represented Free State. We look forward to inviting him back for the 2017 edition.
This year Andrew Lindsay is in the curator’s seat. His take is: Young Capital: one liners. We are thrilled to have this seasoned stalwart who has been operating mostly on the edge of the periphery of the mainstream of the South African art world to great effect.
Biography:
THIS IS ANDREW LINDSAYS VISION FOR JOBURG FRINGE YOUNG CAPITAL 2016.
Human capital a collection of resources –
all knowledge, talents, skills, abilities, experience, intelligence, training, judgement and wisdom possessed individually and collectively by individuals in a population. These resources are the total capacity of the people that represent a form of wealth which can be directed to accomplish the goals of the nation or state or a portion thereof. “Joburg Fringe Young Capital – One liners is an attempt to show the incredible wealth of talent in our emerging young artists.
Its inspiration came from the privilege of being a judge a few years ago for a group schools exhibition, I was astounded by the quality and depth of the work presented and walked away thinking that these works should reach a wider audience and that our older generation would be so inspired by the potential and intelligence and sheer talent of our young artists, not only artists, but young people that were truly engaged and questioning.
The one liners was to try and bring in as many artists as possible limiting the participating artists to 1 or 2 works each.
And so the search began. This was early August….
Unfortunately it corresponded smack in the middle of school holidays busy schedules and limited funding therefore excluding most of our hoped for participants.
This current offering falls short on many levels but it forms a modest beginning that over time and supported by proper funding will provide the grounds to make our young capital prosper.
For this exhibition we widened the scope to include more mature (in terms of age) artists with little exposure and that are young in the art world.
There is a lack of public spaces in which dialogues can take place, so we have put our energy in creating a safe space in the middle of our exhibition, for the exhibiting artists to present and talk about their work but also focusing on interesting, challenging, and inspiring talks and facilitated discussions to promote the dialogues we need to have in order to grow our young artistic and intellectual wealth. “
