"Stop Nonsense is a night documentary project in which I seek to document the changes induced by the wall built around my grandmother’s house. The vocable “Stop Nonsense” which is generally used in South African townships refers to any wall constructed with bricks and cement with the intention of providing protection and avoiding conflicts between neighbours. The project site in a small township called Phola Park located in Thokoza, east of Johannesburg, South Africa. It was established in the early 1950’s under the racial segregation government act Native Urban Area Consolidation Act. The Township is a place with distinct ethnic groups but is predominated by low-class Xhosa people. I started this project in late 2015 when the wall was built up, I was spellbound by the sudden change after the wall had been constructed. Things were not the same anymore, particularly at night. The yard had a different ambiance, beyond the borders of the wall existed a vibrant township during the night. In this body of work, I have been capturing what is happening, but I have also been trying to recreate artfully pictorial scenes of the events prior to the construction of the wall as well as the events leading to its creation."

In my process of creating a narrative, it is always me coming face to face with my constant consternation. I am confronting those persistent fears that have kept me up at night. It is the excessive thinking that leads to worry and apprehension, that alters how i processes emotions and behaviour .At times a person faces potentially harmful or worry triggers, feelings of anxiety are not only normal but necessary for survival. It’s the wheel of the world, right? As we enroot things become increasingly stressful and that strain is coursed by us thinking of the substandard scenario that our life’s can take. Because as human being we can never be content with what we have, we want more but more comes with a lot of apprehension. They say do what makes you agitated and that will indicate if you have what it takes to make it. As humans we take delight in putting ourselves in positions where its survival of the fittest. And all these emotions come into play especially to the life of an artist who has to deal with constantly thinking of new creative works to put out good solid works. And that requires a lot of you mental energy and with that comes doubt and second guessing yourself /work. You overwork your mental capacity to a point where it feels like you’re going round and around. I’m inspired by my everyday life and my nightmares and my anxiety play a huge role.

My work in painting, sculptural objects and installation is rooted in my positionality as a Motswana artist working from a place of dislocation. The sphere of painting and its vast history can act as a stand-in for history and the world at-large. I use painting and sculptural installation to locate and build a space for myself in this history, as a subject and participant of the contemporary moment.
