Curated by Sarie Potter

Proposal:

TAKING A STAND, curated by Sarie Potter, will showcase work made by artists who are more well known for other forms of production. This ‘unlimited’ show, however, presents outputs occupying the periphery of the art world: drawings by BONOLO KAVULA, photographs by CLAUDIA SHNEIDER, paintings and sculptures by GRAEME WILLIAMS, and photographs by NIKLAS ZIMMER. While the title ‘TAKING A STAND’ nods at the photographic practice of taking a photograph, it also refers to a significant moment of living: the time to spring into action.

Biography:

GRAEME WILLIAMS – A South African photographer who initially came to the fore in the early nineties when he documented the country’s transition to democracy. Since then he has concentrated on creating highly personal essays. His work over the past two decades in the mediums of painting and sculpture have to date been less prominent. This exhibition features some of his recent paintings and sculptures that embody his idiosyncratic world view.
CLAUDIA SHNEIDER – A South African artist and brain-mother of the Joburg Fringe. Claudia spent five years at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich a graduate of the class of Hermann Jünger. Claudia Shneider is mainly known for her painting, drawing and installation work; this exhibition will feature a selection of her photographs.
BONOLO KAVULA – A graduate of Michaelis School of Fine Art (University of Cape Town). Her video piece ‘You must be exhausted’ was a finalist in the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition (2014). Bonolo Kavula works predominantly in print media and at times incorporates video and installation elements in her work. Obfuscation (darkening and obscuring the sight of something) is a concept she uses to describe her art journey and investigation.
NIKLAS ZIMMER- is a German-South African artist, academic and musician. He exhibits, teaches and performs in various galleries,
tertiary institutions and venues in and around Cape Town. He was born in Thailand, went to prep school in Lesotho, and matriculated in Germany. He holds degrees in Fine Art from the University of Cape Town, and a BA in education from University of Cologne. Zimmer has spent many years involved in various aspects of the arts, as a teacher of theory and discourse of art and critical studies at secondary and tertiary institutions in Cape Town and Stellenbosch, and in his own practise in video, sound, performance, sculpture and photography since the late ‘90s.
SARIE POTTER (curator) was born and raised in Johannesburg where she spent six years directing South Photographs (the successor to the legendary Afrapix – a unique conduit of photography to world media during Apartheid South Africa). She archived the work of some of South Africa’s now world famous documentary photographers. She has worked on the Joburg Fringe in a variety of capacities over the past 9 years, notably curator 2013 + 2014 and director 2016, this is the first time that she is TAKING A STAND. Her day jobs entail itinerant photographic and picture research, archiving and taking care of collections. She is a graduate of the first ever class in curatorship at Michaelis School of Fine Art (University of Cape Town).
