Hummingbird Arts Collab

Proposal:

The Hummingbird Arts Collab consists of a group of 7 women in various phases of life and love. For the 2017 Joburg Fringe, the group is submitting a variety of works for a themed exhibition dealing with ‘trousseau’ – the traditional collection of household items for ‘happy ever after’ wedded bliss.

The monotypes and collages by Hetta Pieterse expose the irony within decaying romantic notions around trousseau.

Minitza van der Walt chooses the King Protea as a prime symbol of Afrikaner endurance within marriage; for better or for worse, its beauty remains.

Lein Smuts explores the psyche and souls of women who have their own cycles and seasons: doing and solitude; running and staying; being involved and being removed; questioning and resting; creating and incubating; returning to the soul-place.

Nellien Brewer explores her family history and childhood on a remote farm in KZN, against a backdrop of natural complexity and enduring faith.

Mimi van der Merwe’s printed works are evocative of traditional marriage celebrations.

Deirdre Botha playfully treads the woolly line between crafts and arts with doilied mandalas and demure demi brides, winking and teasing viewers.

Kim Gladwin, the seventh member of the Hummingbird Art Collab, will unfortunately not be participating in this exhibition.

Biography:

Mimi van der Merwe initiated her art studies in Stellenbosch University, after which she trained at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris – with a specialisation in etching. In 1997 she furthered her printmaking training in the studio of JW Heyter, also in Paris, France. She has been teaching printmaking processes (apart from painting and drawing) in Pretoria since 1984.

Lein Smuts was born in 1975, graduated from University of Pretoria (BA FA) in 1997, and has extensively exhibited in Gauteng, in various group exhibitions. She is actively involved in community development projects in the disability sector. She also established the trademark, Zoetlief, and has two shops.

Hetta Pieterse is a full-time publisher, having spent her career working mostly with words, ink and paper, from newspapers to academic books and some highly artistic books with even sound parts added. Recent artworks include commissioned works for creative writing (a novel and a volume of poetry).

Deidre Botha, with a background in fine arts and particularly oil painting, started the company Woodendoodles and more recently, Woollendoodles; creating handmade three-dimensional décor items.

Minitza van der Walt from Minitzart (also a décor trademark), supplies art items countrywide. Her work is stocked by the interior shop Weylandts.

Nellien Brewer originally qualified as a landscape architect. She spent approximately 20 years in this profession before registering at Unisa for the BVA degree, which she completed in 2011.

Kim Gladwin has a thriving airbrush studio, and specialises in the transformation of motorbikes. Unfortunately, Kim is unable to participate in the 2017 Joburg Fringe.
