Description

The exhibition Vahombe: Vanobuda Mumvura Vachikwira Kumakore is a series of photographs that merge skyscapes with historical images of Zimbabwe.

The photographs are a merger between skyscapes and images of the leaders of the First Chimurenga. Thus the prject aims to explore themes of dominance, defiance and subjugation through a process of obscuring or illumination in a myriad of color.
Their ethereal quality hopes to evoke a poetic connection between the present and the past both physical and political as well as the world of the tangible and spiritual. The figures of Mbuya Nehanda, Sekuru Kaguvi, Mukwati, amongst others, are an echo from the past and reminder of our forgotten heroes and lost traditions. The correlation between contemporary life and traditional culture is highlighted by the juxtaposition of urban, archival and mythical elements in the photographs.
